i cant believe how much depth is in this report this will be sitting on a councillors desk tomorrow morrning wether they read it or not is another question,im not sure where to start here ,you are spot on about not much change in figures, every new plate i know are very happy about their earnings, the older plates are spreading gossip about the six seaters not being able to pay their vehicles but every six seater i know has kept there old taxi wether it be white plate or hired, as a second vehicle, i have two years to pay on my old car and can hand it back or sell it but have decided just to keep up the payments on top of my eurobus, i also know two ops who have three cars on hp , if we were really struggling i think all the private cars would be first to go, drivers whom out number the ops are having a fielday with some unbelievable deals(150 any five nights ) plus more, work 12 hours friday and the deals paid sat,sun thurs, wed ,to yourself what more could you ask,i like the bit about the
butchers ,bakers etc, the problem is the general public dont know about this and usually spurt (its a shame on the owners opening the town like that) the unlevell playing field will have to be talked about at some stage
the next meeting is sept and after that its only two months till its one year from the first wav issued, surely the council have had enough time to decide what to do, the pip is counting on too many votes as most drivers as you say wont back them which only leaves ops ,all fares went up this week and i still havent heard a single complaint from customers and am still getting regular tips , even a small run is up by 30p, this christmas will be the first anybody in a wheelchair can pick up the phone and order a taxi and get one instead of depending on realitives or not bothering at all,
it will make a big difference i just hope the council look at this before next christmas and make all taxis wavs...

I like the bit about the drivers not realising that as cab drivers they will (by law) have to abstain from meetings where taxi issues are discussed.

Oh dear, back to the drawing board for them methinks.

get a different name too. the People's Independent Party sound like something out of a Monty Python film, no one would take it seriously.

It would make more sense if the drivers pooled thire resources into just one of the normal parties.
By starting a new one you will [edited by admin] off the lot.

I see someone was writing to the Tele about Mr Petrie's party.

But I wonder how many of the 100 are taxi ops?

But he seems to have taken the hint from people on this read (no doubt he reads this forum avidly) and changed the name from People's Independent Party.

But it's not much of an improvement - the Independent Vote of the Electorate - IVOTE

I think the most telling part of the letter is the EX in ex-councillor.

Dundee must go the whole hog and make all vehicles wheelchair accessible.
They must all have an even footing in the trade.
If the HC operators of saloon type vehicles are not willing to go the WAV way, then they can transfer to PH.
The saloon car operators are laughing at the newer lads that have put on the Wavs, let the boot be on the other foot, all Wavs.
 =D>

It would take a bit of courage to go the whole hog with the WAVs, and it's doubtful if DCC has that.

As it is, they took the heat off the wheelchair and hire plate issues without forcing the old plates to do anything.

The old plates will have two main things on their agenda - closing the town again and keeping their plates saloon. Thus Alan Petrie's recent spat with David Young about it.

Both made a virtue out of helping the disabled, but Mr Petrie was clearly more bothered about his party hacks (good pun there :D ) keeping their saloon plates - after all that's what his party's all about, not helping the disabled.

Similarly, Mr Young's conversion (another good pun :D ) to WAVs seems more than a tad opportunistic.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but I'm damn good at puns

I forgot to say, it may well be that DCC will leave the Scottish Exec to sort out the WAV issue now that the heat is off it in Dundee.

Otherwise it would be a bit messy, and it's easier to blame Edinburgh than let City Square take the flak.

HEE HEE

You're probably correct - if you have to point out your puns, or put them in brackets, or put them in capitals, then they're probably not that good :D

But when an opportunity for a pun is handed to you on a PLATE, then you just can't ignore them.

So I suppose the taxi owners' new political party never got off the ground, as the article predicted?

However you might be interested to know that their proposed leader, Mr Allan Petrie, has been on the move a bit since then.

Mr Petrie, an erstwhile SNP-councillor, left that party and then stood as an independent, but was unsuccessful. Then there was the proposed Peoples' Independent Party with the taxi owners, then another independent group called IVOTE, then he backed Labour in the last elections, now he's apparently joined the LibDems, and they're making a big song and dance about it. Why, I don't know, because they're obviously his last choice and really his only option left.

A couple of letters in tonight's evening paper:

On the move

I WAS very surprised to read that former SNP councillor Allan Petrie had been accepted by the Lib/Dems as a new member.
It is my understanding that when local SNP members deselected Mr Petrie as a council candidate, he left the party and continued in the council as an independent.

He then went on to stand as an Independent against the SNP and was rejected by the voters.

After this failure he then attempted to start his own political party.

Come the General Election he openly supported Labour’s Iain Luke’s attempt to take the Dundee East Westminster seat.

I can only wonder what has happened to make him turn to the Lib/Dems? — The Seer.

Jumped ship

ONE-TIME SNP councillor, who turned independent, only to emerge as part of the Labour Party campaign team last year, Allan Petrie has jumped ship once again.
The latest membership card to grace his wallet is issued by one of the few political parties with which he’s not yet been associated, the Liberal Democrats.

This man once claimed to be the independent voice of the electorate, whose voice was silenced when he realised he couldn’t muster enough support. Cast adrift once more, he’s found another berth. — Confuse the Cat.
